Data disasters will happen. Accepting that reality is the first step in preparing a comprehensive disaster plan. Time is always against an IT team when a disaster strikes, therefore the details of a disaster plan are critical for success.

Here are some suggestions from Ontrack Data Recovery engineers of what not to do when data disasters occur:

In a disaster recovery, never restore data to the server that has lost the data – always restore to a separate server or location.
In Microsoft Exchange or SQL failures, never try to repair the original Information Store or database files – work on a copy.
In a deleted data situation, turn off the machine immediately. Do not shut down Windows – this will prevent the risk of overwritten data.
Use a volume defragmenter regularly.
If a drive fails on RAID systems, never replace the failed drive with a drive that was part of a previous RAID system – always zero out the replacement drive before using.
If a drive is making unusual mechanical noises, turn it off immediately and get assistance.
Have a valid backup before making hardware or software changes.
Label the drives with their position in a RAID array.
Do not run volume repair utilities on suspected bad drives.
Do not run defragmenter utilities on suspected bad drives.
In a power loss situation with a RAID array, if the file system looks suspicious, or is unmountable, or the data is inaccessible after power is restored, do not run volume repair utilities.

System Recovery Procedures for NAS 4100

Overview: The NAS 4100 comes with 4 separate hard drives. In the event of a hard drive failure you will be notified via an Email alert and/or Web UI. RAID regeneration can take up to 30 minutes depending on which drive has failed.

To check status of your NAS 4100 drives use Logical Disk Manager. To access the Disk Management utility:

Open “MaxNeighborhood” and double-click on the NAS 4100 that you want to create the folder on.
Login to NAS 4100 with the appropriate Administrator (or Administrator equivalent) username and password.
Click on “Administer this server appliance”. Upon doing this, the NAS 4100 Home Page will appear in the Browser.
From the Home Page, click on the “Disks and Volumes”Link. At this point, the Disks and Volumes page will be displayed in the Browser.
NOTE: You may click on the Graphical Link OR the Java Text Link…either will suffice.
Click on the “Disks and Volumes”link.

Click the “Yes”button in the VBScript: Disk Configuration Window.
The Windows 2000 Management Snap-In will be displayed in your browser.
The NAS 4100 hard drives are configured as; Disk 0, Disk 1, Disk 2 and Disk 3. Each one of these hard drives, if lost, exhibits slightly different behavior.

Install FreeAgent Mobile Recovery Software To Your FreeAgent Go drive

The following procedure will install the FreeAgent Mobile Recovery software to your FreeAgent Go drive. The FreeAgent Mobile Recovery is offered so that you can reload software to your Freeagent drive in the event that the original software becomes lost or corrupted. The procedure will return the software to its original, default state; it is recommended that you backup any/all critical data before continuing.

Procedure:

Download/extract the mobile-recovery-efigs.zip to your Windows Desktop
Double-click setup-mobile-recovery x.x.xx EFIGS.exe.
Note: The “x” will be denoted by the current revision number
You may see an Open File – Security Warning generated by your operating system; click Run to continue.
Windows Vista Users – If prompted with an User Account Control window, click Continue. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
The Choose Setup Language window opens. Select your Language from the drop-down menu (e.g., English) and click OK. At this point, the FreeAgent Go Tools Setup prepares the InstallShield Wizard.
From the Welcome to The InstallShield Wizard window, click Next.
The Choose Destination Location window opens.
If needed, click Change to choose a different location; select the Drive Letter associated with your FreeAgent Go drive and click OK.
Click Next to continue.
The Ready to Install the Program window opens. Click Install. At this point, the FreeAgent Go Tools installs to your FreeAgent Go Drive. When finished a Configuring Ceedo window opens…this may take awhile to complete.
When finished, the InstallShield Wizard Complete window opens. Click Finish to close the program. Your FreeAgent Go’s software has been returned to its default original state. Please Safely Remove the drive from your computer and reconnect it to launch the AutoPlay Window.

Intel RAID Controller Troubleshooting Guide: My system appears to power on, however there is no video

Check the following:

• Look for a blinking cursor in the top left corner of the screen. If the cursor is there, wait
5 minutes to determine if the system will continue the boot process.

• Your RAID controller may require the addition of a memory module. Verify that the
module is included on the tested memory list for the RAID controller. The tested
memory list is available at http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/server.
Remove and reseat the memory module if memory on the card is installed in a memory
socket.

• Remove all add-in cards, including the RAID controller. See if the server boots using
only the on-board components. If successful, add the cards back in one at a time,
rebooting between each addition. This will help you determine the card that is causing
the problem.

• Listen for any beep codes and refer to your product documentation. A 1-3 beep code
from the RAID card indicates normal operation.

• Make sure the monitor is turned on and the video cable is plugged in completely. If you
are using a switch box to share a monitor between multiple servers, make sure you have
the switch set to the correct server.

If you are unable to resolve this issue, contact your customer support representative. Gather
the following information before making your phone call:

• The make and model server board and RAID controller are you using.
• The version of BIOS and firmware of the server board.
• The version of the firmware on the RAID controller.
• The PBA (Product Board Assembly) number on the board.
• The chassis and power supply the server is using.
• Note what is displayed on the monitor or any sounds emanating from the server system.
